Foodie Q

pizza

PCGuyIV has a Truthful Tuesday Q for us today:

When it comes to dining out, does superb quality of food make up for subpar service, or does stellar service make up for lackluster food?

Nothing makes up for subpar service, in my opinion. For example, one of my Meetup groups keeps ending up at restaurants that can’t seem to handle a large party. Either they forget entrees entirely, or they bring the wrong thing, or they’re simply inattentive. It’s really annoying and makes me not want to go anymore. The actual food, if it ever shows up, is pretty tasty, but still, it’s a buzzkill. I don’t “punish” the server by leaving a bad tip, or no tip, since I suspect the fault is with management. But even so, I am inclined not to return, despite the nice conversation. I guess I’m just not that lonely.

Stellar service doesn’t make up for bad food, but I’ll make a confession: I am not a foodie. Ordinary food is fine with me, as long as it’s prepared properly and served in a reasonable amount of time. I am not a gourmet and prefer pizza or a sandwich to anything fancy or complicated. It goes without saying that if a server forgets the utensils or napkins or a beverage, I’m gonna get super irritated. And before anyone starts about Covid bla bla or minimum wage… that’s not my problem. If they can’t manage to bring me a freaking house salad (what I ordered last week at this stupid place in Huntington Beach), then forget it. I am not going to spend more money there.

Look at that pizza! It’s making me hungry. I find pizza places don’t screw up much, but sadly a lot of people don’t eat it for one reason or another. Oh well.

This coulda been a Monday Peeve… but that’s OK. Now I have an idea for next week’s.

This Too Shall Pass [SYW]

This too shall pass

Happy Monday, my friends! It’s cool here this morning, reminding me of fall and the passing of the seasons, even in Southern California. Melanie starts our week off right with Share Your World, but today I’m flipping her script and beginning at the end. She asks for our personal affirmation, and mine is in the lovely image above: this too shall pass. Whenever I have a bad day, or start down memory lane and get sad, I remind myself that nothing lasts. For me, that’s a good thing. Now onto the questions…

When it’s all said and done, will you have said more than you’ve done?

Absolutely! I’m all talk and no action, and that the way I like it.

What does the world need less of?

People. Pollution. Politics.

Do you feel older or younger than your age?

I feel 60, which I am. I definitely do not feel young, trapped in an old body. My body is achy and tired and likes to stay on the sofa. I don’t want to do the things I did 40 years ago. Some people my age are still running around dating and drinking and searching for excitement. Not me! I am very happy to be a sedate grandma, getting vicarious thrills from books and movies. Maybe that makes me sound older than my age? Fair enough.

What is a cause you’ll always passionately support?

I am passionately supportive of a woman’s right to choose to terminate a pregnancy for any reason in the first trimester (12 weeks). Please note both caveats. I am not on board with the lists of exceptional circumstances, as I don’t believe you need to justify your desire to end your pregnancy ~ in the first 12 weeks. After that, I think there has to be a serious reason, such as a danger to the mother’s physical health. So I am at odds with both polarized positions on this issue, which is fine with me because I dislike extreme stances.

I don’t want my comment section to turn into a flamewar, so if you disagree with me about abortion (from either side), go post about it on your own blog. Thanks for understanding!

TMP25: Cardigans

TMP monday peeve kitty cat

Welcome to my refreshed Monday Peeve! Unburden yourself of an annoyance and you’ll feel better afterward. Or not. Complain in my comments or crab in your own post. Doesn’t have to be on a Monday. You do you.

Today I share a fashion peeve. I love sweaters and I especially love cardigans because they can be layered. Well, they HAVE to be layered if they don’t have buttons, amirite? I’ve may have complained about this before, but so what… since my refresh I’ve decided I can re-peeve old peeves since they aren’t on my site now (and don’t get me started about the creepy Wayback Machine). Anywho, buttons? What the hell ever happened to buttons? Is there a shortage? Did crows carry them all off to decorate their nests? WHAT??? Why are all the cardigans open-front? And those old-lady clippy things don’t work either ~ I bought three and they’re cute, but they’re only for show. They don’t keep the cardi closed. The sides flop around sloppily all day. So annoying.

Check back next Monday for more GRRRR. Until then, stay chill, my friends.

Promptapalooza

universe planets stars jar

I had a big smile today when I saw Fandango’s flash fiction challenge because it reminded me of a poem my high school bestie wrote. It was about a woman seeing her reflection in various sections of a chandelier and wondering which face she’d put on “for him.” Fantastic poem, Elizabeth (if you’re reading this) ~ I have never forgotten it!

Is it fair to glom onto Fandango’s post with a link when I’m not actually writing fiction in this post? I guess that is for him to judge. Anyway, there are already some good responses to the prompt and my first thought upon viewing it related to the horror show of my relationships, which probably wouldn’t hold a candle to those other posts. Maybe you suspect that I exaggerate a bit when I periodically mention how terrible dating was for me, but rest assured that, if anything, I have understated the whole debacle. It was literally a nightmare.

I’ve begun doing Happy Color again. Never really quit or deleted the app, but I guess I got tired of the pictures when they themed them to Disney or other cartoons. But I’ve found some gems lately (like the one I used here), especially the “pictures within an image,” which I really like. For example, they’ll have a wolf outline and the body will be full of trees, plus a night sky with the moon and stars. They also have countries, which are fun too.

I can’t believe it’s already noon! Half the day has gone and tomorrow I return to the office, not that I mind working. It’s so great though to have a 3-day weekend… I feel I’ve accomplished a lot, but right now my mind is blank, so idk what I did. Watched 2 movies last night, which I suppose I’ll review in a Quickie. Bloggers don’t seem to comment much on those posts, so idk if I’ll keep them going much longer. Had a whisper of an idea to work on one of my incomplete books. We’ll see. Soon, it’ll be actual fall, pumpkin time, with less and less daylight ~ sometimes I write more prolifically then. Not sure why.

Speaking of my books, someone clicked on a link today and bought Going Dark. Thank you! I hope you enjoy it.

Weeping

Blue butterfly fantasy night magic

Reader, I deleted it. That “wee” post, I mean. I promised myself I would not post filler stuff after my refresh and that was definitely filler. Unfortunately, I failed to summon up inspiration from Linda’s word for anything creative. I don’t want to abandon the prompt entirely, so I will leave you with a lovely song instead. “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” was written by George Harrison for the Beatles 1968 White Album. It’s a beautiful song, one of my favorites from them. This time, my opinion coincides with other people’s, and WMGGW is listed on Rolling Stone as one of the 500 greatest songs of all time.

Icy Smile

My smile for the week is about the OC Fair! Yep, the fair returned to Orange County and I attended on Sunday with a group of friends. Had loads of fun wandering around looking at the arts & crafts, chomping on a roasted ear of corn, and listening to Twisted Gypsy, an awesome Fleetwood Mac cover band. Along the way, we stopped for shaved ice and mine was mango. So refreshing!

More info about the band can be found on the Twisted Gypsy website. Besides their great name, they did a great job on the most popular FM songs, plus a couple of Stevie’s solo tunes. Niki Bente plays a wonderful Stevie. Not only is there a striking resemblance between the two women, but Niki’s voice is super strong, she’s a lovely dancer, and she has fantastic charisma. She clearly was the star, though the other players did well also. I did miss the British accent though on some of the vocals. You don’t realize it’s there until it’s not.

Love the fair!

Regarding Audiobooks…

headphones listening

Today Frank asks us how we feel about audiobooks, specifically if they count as “actually reading” in our minds. Of course, if you can’t see to read, they do, but what about the rest of us? For me, it’s not so much as they don’t count, but that I have no interest in them. Well, it’s really more than that. I actively dislike listening to another person read to me. It’s a form of torture to have to listen to some voice drone on and on and on while I’m supposed to remember what they say. Like those horrible lecture halls back in school where I’d have to doodle to stay awake. This is probably why I don’t go to poetry readings, even though I love poetry. You know what I love about poetry? READING THE WORDS ON THE PAGE. Sometimes, if they really grab me, I might read them aloud to myself. But I don’t want to hear someone else read, even if he has the most gorgeous British accent in the world. And sorry this does include any audio files you’ve put on your blog of poetry readings. I include myself in this too, by the way ~ I don’t want to read my work aloud to anyone.

There is no way I’d be able to concentrate on someone reading a book to me. If I were driving, I wouldn’t be able to focus on the words. That’s why music is perfect for driving… it flows over you effortlessly. If I were lying down, I’d fall asleep to someone reading. If I were alert at home, I’d start doing something else while the reading progressed because I can’t just SIT there, listening, with nothing to do or watch. And then I’d miss half the story due to lack of concentration. Again, in school, I had a huge problem paying attention while teachers droned on. I was fabulous at memorizing what was in the textbooks, which usually was enough to get great grades without paying much attention to their jabbering.

In my opinion, there’s too much noise in the world already, bombarding me every moment of the day. Yes, I did miss some human interaction during lockdown, but now already there’s too much noise again. Traffic, talking, hold music everywhere, announcements in stores, machinery, fans, things dinging and buzzing, freaking BIRDS, and my cat who needs to proclaim his philosophical ideas at 3AM. Ugh.

That said, I made two audiobooks, at a friend’s urging, because “people like them.” That was a horrible experience! Nothing against the two wonderful women who volunteered to read them for no money (sometimes actresses like to have them in their resumes and will do short ones for you) ~ they actually turned out beautifully. That is, if you want to listen to someone yak in your ear. WHICH I DO NOT (if you missed that so far). But the point is, these short books took forever to make because I had to listen to the audio files the volunteers uploaded. A book that takes you a half hour to read could take 3 hours (or more) to “proofread.” If there was even one minor mistake in a file, the reader had to record it again, and I had to listen to it again (not the whole book, but a segment). Naturally, because we’re talking about poetry, people are as uninterested in buying those audiobooks as they are my regular Kindle books. It helped my sales not one bit. In fact, I have made NOTHING because they won’t pay unless you hit $25, which I have not.

GRRRR!

TMP12: Search Results

TMP monday peeve

Welcome to my refreshed Monday Peeve! Unburden yourself of an annoyance and you’ll feel better afterward. Or not. Complain in my comments or crab in your own post. Doesn’t have to be on a Monday. You do you.

Today I’m here to crab about search results, whether Google, Bing, Amazon, or what have you. It’s so annoying to try to find something specific and end up with a zillion irrelevant results. This often happens when I’m looking up songs that have a certain word in the lyrics. It also happens when I’m shopping and want only the thing I search on, like say a blue skirt… don’t show me every other blue thing or non-blue skirts or potato peelers (WTF?). They’ll say well some other person who searched for blue skirts ALSO bought a potato peeler, so we thought you might like one too. I know these marketers believe they can’t go wrong by shoving as many things in your face as possible, but in fact that is wrong. I’m only one person, but I frequently get annoyed enough to leave the site without spending money, which can’t possibly be their goal. Since I’m not unique, I bet others also exit in disgust.

These sites should take a hint from WordPress, who make it damn difficult to find anything you’ve posted before or media you’ve uploaded. If you don’t put the exact word, forget it! And even then, half the time the search freezes and you have to refresh and begin again. Of course, that’s because WP want you to reupload media so you’ll use up your storage and have to purchase more. And I’m beginning to think that the photo apps are doing the same thing when they kindly stylize my photos and offer me various arrangements. I noticed today that many of my photos have been saved several times, GRRRR!

This is like three peeves in one. Must be your lucky day!

Jacuzzi Smile

Bear splash pool water

This weekend marked another step in my “return to normalcy:” I took the plunge and went back to my gym for the first time in over a year. Since my back is messed up, I only did a half hour on the elliptical, but I feel good about that. And then… ah bliss! I went into the deliciously warm jacuzzi and it was fabulous! Relaxing as a massage. I could have stayed in there all day, mmm. The gym wasn’t crowded and I felt perfectly safe (I had both vaxes back in April). I’ll be doing this again soon. Big smile!
