Flame Of Thought

Past the silhouettes

Of stagnant automatons,

A new realm ignites–

Imagination’s fire reigns

For those who dare to wonder.

This week’s theme is summer and the picture is below. Here is the song snippet from “Suddenly Last Summer,” a 1983 song from the Motels.

It happened one summer, it happened one time
It happened forever, for a short time
A place for a moment, an end to a dream
Forever I loved you, forever it seemed

Couple sitting by a stream

Elysium

Woman with hummingbird

I dreamt you were a hummingbird,

Your bejeweled wings a blur,

With eternal secrets hidden

Under your trembling feathers.

I prayed that you would see me,

As you danced among the gardens,

But you were swallowed by the sun.

I flung off my heavy shawl

And flew over these stone walls,

Searching for Elysium.

Waiting For Tears

I trudged through the gelid air,

The grey clouds fat with rain,

But I did not cry.

Our dog barked at the creek,

Confused at its solid state,

And my eyes stayed dry.

Every day is now the same,

Hours morphing into weeks,

Waiting for my tears.

This week’s theme is moon and the picture is below. Here is the song snippet from “Moondance,” a 1970 song from Van Morrison.

Well, it’s a marvelous night for a moondance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance
‘Neath the cover of October skies

Cats on a roof with a full moon

SLS ~ Cool/Freeze/Heat/Melt

Song Lyric Sunday

Thanks again to the host of Song Lyric Sunday… Jim Adams. He does a great job putting the SLS event together every week. This week’s prompts give us some fantastic musical choices. I’m going to deviate from the exact words just a tiny bit because I have a song that’s perfect for the theme. Please allow me to present Pat Benatar’s “Fire and Ice!”

This 1981 song was the lead single from Pat’s third album, Precious Time. It was written by Pat Benatar, Tom Kelly, and Scott Sheets. Pat won her second Grammy for Best Female Rock Performance in 1982 due to this song (she has 4 Grammies now). It went as high as #17 in Billboard’s Hot 100 and #2 on Mainstream Rock.

Fire and Ice

Ooh, you’re giving me the fever tonight
I don’t wanna give in, I’d be playing with fire
You forget, I’ve seen you work before
Take ’em straight to the top, leave ’em crying for more
I’ve seen you burn ’em before
Fire and ice
You come on like a flame, then you turn a cold shoulder
Fire and ice
I wanna give you my love, but you’ll just take a little piece of my heart
You’ll just tear it apart
Moving in for the kill tonight
You got every advantage when they put out the lights
It’s not so pretty when it fades away
‘Cause it’s just an illusion in this passion play
I’ve seen you burn ’em before
Fire and ice
You come on like a flame, then you turn a cold shoulder
Fire and ice

I wanna give you my love, but you’ll just take a little piece of my heart
So you think you got it all figured out
You’re an expert in the field, without a doubt
But I know your methods inside and out
And I won’t be taken in by fire and ice
Fire and ice
You come on like a flame, then you turn a cold shoulder
Fire and ice
I wanna give you my love, but you’ll just take a little piece of my heart
You come on like a flame, then you turn a cold shoulder
Fire and ice
I wanna give you my love, but you’ll just take a little piece of my heart
You come on like a flame, then you turn a cold shoulder
Fire and ice
You come on like a flame, then you turn a cold shoulder
Fire and ice

As an extra, maybe some of you will enjoy Robert Frost’s 1920 poem of the same name.

Fire and Ice

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

This week’s theme is time and the picture is below. Here is the song snippet from “Time After Time,” a 1983 song from Cyndi Lauper (co-written with Rob Hyman).

Lying in my bed
I hear the clock tick and think of you
Caught up in circles
Confusion is nothing new
Flashback, warm nights
Almost left behind

 Time pieces

Soul’s Dark Night

Demons in the dark with glowing eyes

Ripples across a receptive mind
Disturb the soul’s dark night;
Awakening comes slowly as
Suggestions of connections
Form then dissolve again.
There is no space
For revelations
Until ancient demons
Are forced to vacate.
Some go quietly;
Others scream in outrage,
Their claws sunk deeply
In the foundation.
When the last devil is pulled
From the cave,
You stare into its face:
A mirror.

Soar

Black birds in stormy sky

As they worship the sun,

She prays for rain.

When the dark clouds come,

Her heart soars with power

For this grace she created.

Hour after hour, day after day,

The storm washes away

Everything that was,

Including her pain.

Her tormentors pass on,

Drowned in the night;

Four birds cut through the sky,

As dawn starts to break.

This week’s theme is paradise and the picture is below. Here is the song snippet from “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” a 1978 song from Jimmy Buffett.

Cheeseburger in paradise
Heaven on earth with an onion slice
Not too particular not too precise
I’m just a cheeseburger in paradise
