Once upon a time, sweetheart, we found a new planet that seemed a lot like this one. Daddy was in charge of arranging the journey so we could collect samples.
Samples of what, Mommy?
Water, air, plants, insects… all the good things we need to sustain life. The voyage took several years, and when Daddy returned he had to present a report that explained how the mission was a failure.
Did Daddy get in trouble?
The council wasn’t happy, but it wasn’t the crew’s fault that they’d arrived too late and the planet’s inhabitants had destroyed most of everything. But Daddy did manage to save some important items.
Like what? I’m getting sleepy…
They took some human babies back with them. They would have died if they’d stayed on that ruined planet. But sadly the babies died aboard ship anyway.
Oh no, Mommy. That’s so sad.
Except one.

My interest in piqued. I want to know more about the one that survived.
When I write a short story, I often end it in a similar fashion, let the reader fill in the rest.

You’d probably enjoy a story called “The Ugly Little Boy” by Asimov.

Such a complex story in such few words—not easy to do. You make it look effortless. Well, done!
