TMP87: Trash Dumpers

TMP monday peeve kitty cat

Welcome to my refreshed Monday Peeve! Unburden yourself of an annoyance and you’ll feel better afterward. Or not. Complain in my comments or crab in your own post. Doesn’t have to be on a Monday. You do you.

Today I’m peeved about peeps who dump their trash in blatant disregard for the rules. I’m not talking about litterbugs who fling garbage on the roads ~ they’re horrible, of course. No, I’m talking about those who can’t be bothered to do what it takes to properly dispose of a ratty sofa, broken lamp, dirty mattress, wrecked TV, etc., so they put it next to the dumpster, knowing that the trash guys are not going to take it and neither are the scavengers who sift through the bins looking for junk to sell at the flea market or whatever. So the cruddy old stuff rots there in the trash area for weeks until the HOA gets someone to transport it to the dump. Often, these inconsiderate, lazy folks are moving out, so they don’t care about their former home any longer (if they ever did). There’s a sign saying cameras are on and people will get fined for disobeying the rules, but I don’t think anything actually happens except our dumpster area looks disgusting.

GRRRR!

  1. Your post is timely Paula. I am having the same problem. A nearby neighbor (we don’t know who) has dumped half a piano outside on the curb. They must have chopped it in pieces are are going to leave it out one piece at a time in the hope it will get taken by the trash man. It’s the part that shows all the piano wires and the sharp pegs are all exposed and dangerous. It’s low on the ground so anyone can trip over it while walking their dog in the evening. I tried to move it and it is impossible. The HOA is having a problem trying to get the owner to admit to it. What an eyesore! 😡

  2. I agree that people do this, and it looks awful. I’m not sure if there is a big junk collection truck day, but stuff will sit there for a long time, and then it’s gone. There is a place to take your oversize trash, but not everyone has a way to haul it. There needs to be some kind of solution, though.

  3. I’ve often seen this when students leave the hostels.

  4. In my neighborhood we are allowed to dispose of any type of trash every week on the same day that we put out our garbage and recycling. Last week I tossed out an old cat tree and it was gone in about a half an hour.

  5. Agreed but in my new complex the trash bins are inaccessible to me and out of my sight.  However they pick up about three in the morning but think I’m getting used to that now after a year living here.

  7. I am glad we don’t have those issues here. The city hauls off anything left in the alley.

  8. I often think people just aren’t aware, i am more bothered by people leaving bags of garbage next to the dumpsters as opposed to in them.

  9. Sounds like a case of too much anonymity. We have a similar problem, though not as extreme. It is people putting boxes and trash bags at the (visible) end of the elevator lobby instead of in or next to the trash bins that are around the corner, an additional six feet away.
Maybe you could start a rumor that SOMEONE got fined, the other day, and apartment management was so angry that they called the police, who were able to identify the perps from the camera footage and imposed an additional fine.

  10. We have this same issue in my apartments.
I just paid someone $100 to take away a sofa and table a few weeks ago, so I understand that people might have trouble affording to get rid of their junk, but I agree, dumping it is not a good solution.
Homeowners in our town get a few free junk pickups per year. I don’t understand why the apartments don’t get days like this, too– don’t the apartments pay taxes to the city, just like homeowners do?
There are cameras on the dumpsters, so some people have taken to abandoning large items of furniture in areas where there are no cameras.
But, maybe this wouldn’t be as much of a problem if apartments got free junk pickup days like homeowners do.

    • We do pay taxes and we also have HOA fees as well (condo complex), but we don’t have a junk day. We’re supposed to take big stuff to the dump ourselves or pay as you did. It’s just gross and makes the place look trashy from the parking lot 🙁

  12. We have that here also, huge fly tipping problems.

  13. Your HOA or your waste company or both suck! If I have a couch or mattress, I schedule a day, haul it to the curb, and they take it away. I live in a house though, so I guess multi unit stuff would be different, but still. There should be a way🙄
The apartment complex on the other side of our 10′ cinderblock wall has their dumpster right against the wall. I’m always finding trash chucked into my yard🤯🤯 People are gross!

  14. The slobs who dump their trash in the river are among my least favorite people. Have they no shame?

  17. We have these kinds of vermin in Norway, too. It’s why we can’t have nice things, like a conveniently located, unmanned recycling center.
