SLS: Landslide

misty mountains lake moon fog

Thanks once again to Jim Adams for hosting Song Lyric Sunday. Today’s theme is hidden gems: great songs that missed the top of the charts ~ and can you believe that “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac is one of them?

I took my love, I took it down
I climbed a mountain and I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills
‘Til the landslide brought me down

Oh, mirror in the sky
What is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changin’ ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?

Yes, this iconic song by one of the best-selling bands of the 1970s was a dud on the charts. The song was written by Stevie Nicks and appeared on Fleetwood Mac’s 1975 album Fleetwood Mac (aka the white album); it also appears on their best-of releases in 1992 and 2002 along with some of their live albums. But, oddly, “Landslide” only went to No. 51 on Billboard Hot 100, though it did hit the 10-spot on Adult Contemporary.

Oh-oh, take my love, take it down
Oh-oh, climb a mountain and you turn around
And if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Well, the landslide bring it down
And if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Well, the landslide bring it down
Oh-ohh, the landslide bring it down

The heck with the charts though ~ “Landslide” was certified Gold in 2009 and continues to be in frequent rotation on oldies rock stations. Nicks sings it on every Fleetwood Mac tour (except one) and also on her solo tours. As of 2017, it’s sold over 2,000,000 copies, so someone out there likes it besides me! (Info from Wikipedia.)

You see, it’s fair to have a “no disagreeable comment” policy, but then you have to purposely TAUNT…

  4. When I discovered this prompt, this was the first song that I picked, but since I already wrote a post on this, I went with something else. I was hoping to listen to this song on your post Paula, but you forgot to drop in the video.
