OK, so once again my choice for Song Lyric Sunday does not contain any of Jim Adams’ keywords, but I think you’d agree that “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” embodies the ideas of excitement and pleasure. Robert Hazard wrote and recorded this song in 1979, but Cyndi Lauper’s 1983 cover turned it into a smash hit. It was the lead single from her debut solo album She’s So Unusual.
I come home, in the mornin’ light
My mother says “When you gonna live your life right?”
Oh momma dear, we’re not the fortunate ones
And girls, they wanna have fun
Oh girls just wanna have fun…
The phone rings, in the middle of the night
My father yells “What you gonna do with your life?”
Oh daddy dear, you know you’re still number one
But girls they wanna have fun
Oh girls just wanna have
That’s all they really want
Cyndi rewrote the original lyrics because she found them to be misogynistic. Good move. The song hit No. 2 on Billboard Hot 100, and the album ended up at No. 4. The video is super fun as well (is that Louise Lasser as a telephone operator?) GJWTHF received Grammy noms and is listed as one of the greatest pop songs and as one of the best videos. Weird Al did a fantastic parody of it called “Girls Just Wanna Have Lunch.” It’s true though ~ I love lunch!
