TMP59: “I Never Watched…”

TMP monday peeve kitty cat

Welcome to my refreshed Monday Peeve! Unburden yourself of an annoyance and you’ll feel better afterward. Or not. Complain in my comments or crab in your own post. Doesn’t have to be on a Monday. You do you.

This isn’t new, but I get really tired of people posting crap about how they never watched [whatever show]. WHO CARES?! They act all superior about it too. “I never watched one single episode of Game of Thrones!” Wow, do you expect a medal? And they think they’re so unique but ~ newsflash ~ a zillion other people have bragged about never watching it either. I’ve personally not seen any of the Star Trek spinoffs… so what? That doesn’t make me better than people who watch them all or who see every Star Wars flick or who try to catch all the football/basketball/baseball games they can. It’s bizarre how people try to one-up each other (especially on Facebook, lol) over whichever pop culture phenomenon has failed to hook them. Oh my, I’ve turned my TV into a planter and now I listen only to classical symphonies whilst reading Proust (in the original French). Whatever, dude. Look, if you skip watching TV because you’re out feeding the needy or picking up litter on the beach or saving kittens, that’s fantastic and you have every right to toot your horn. But there’s no prize for swerving around a particular TV show or movie only to watch a different one or read a book. STFU already!

  1. LOL, I don’t know why people have to do that either, it’s stupid 😆😁

  2. This is all true… and then there is the opposite side of the coin. This is where I don’t post or brag but respond in conversation to someone referencing a show that I haven’t watched. Then I get treated like a pod person or like I was raised by wolves or kept hostage by Iranian fundamentalists or just being a snob. “WHAT? You never saw “Breaking Bad?” they say. “How did you never see Game of Thrones?” I’m asked as if it were unavoidable. I get put in that space you describe despite never bragging or even raising the subject, just for not following the pop culture trend I’m evidently supposed to be caught up in. Usually, it has more to do with ADHD making it difficult to engage in a 50-hour story than about the quality of the story itself, but I feel no need to get into that.

I get the same flak for failing to follow politicians and parties exclusively as a way of asserting partisanship as a key part of my identity as is so popular today. Rather than create an identity out of partisan affiliations, as most people do today, I don’t like wearing these things on my sleeve, nor do I care to be led by group identification toward hypocritical stances where it was okay for my guy to do the bad thing because I can claim that their guy did the bad thing first so it isn’t bad when we do it. Bullshit. My politics comes from my identity and experiences, not the other way around, and identity is what all of this shit, TV show bragging included, is all about. So when I try to talk about issues instead of people I get the geniuses who tell me all about their special insight that shows how I’m REALLY just pushing for Bernie or someone else and merely pretending to be focused on the issue, and I will usually refrain from speaking to such jackasses again.

I watched 2 shows yesterday: the 3rd episode of Bewitched, where she turned Jack Warden into a dog for mashing on her, and the Addams Family episode where they tried to find a husband for cousin Melancholia. Good stuff.

    • That’s a great point & I just may steal it for a future peeve: creating an identity out of stuff you like instead of choosing your poisons based upon who you actually are. This is why people will fight to the death over stupid shit like soccer teams. I agree it’s as ridiculous to criticize someone for NOT watching a show as it is to announce you haven’t watched.

Nope, we can’t discuss issues. Much better to post a meme!

I love Bewitched when Paul Lynde pops in 🤣

  5. Ah, but can you read Proust in the original French while playing the violin while doing the Black Swan’s 32 fouetté turns on pointe on top of your tv planter?

  6. Hey Paula, I’ve never watched one single episode of “Game of Thrones.” But I just finished watching five seasons of “The Last Kingdom” on Netflix, which I’m told is like “Game of Thrones” but without fire breathing, flying dragons.

  7. Ha. I’m sure I’ve done that. In fact, just a couple days ago I was bragging on Facebook about not following the Amber Heard Johnny Depp story. I still stand by that, though. I mean that’s a special case.

    • I wanted to avoid that, but it was impossible if you peruse any news sites. And they’re still going on about it!

      • I read the headlines about it as I looked through Google News feed, and some blurbs, which was enough to keep me away. But that’s most things. I don’t usually even look at the “entertainment” section, not because I’m a superior human being, but because I never know who they’re talking about–at least most of the time. I DID watch a bunch of Game of Thrones, but it was binge watching, and when I burned through everything and had to wait a long time for the next season to appear, I lost my HBO Plus password and kind of lost interest, so that was that.

      • I felt the same about Mad Men. It took so long to return that I lost interest. I might have lost internet in GOT for the same reason, but my friends were into it and we watched the last season together, which was fun 🐉

  10. I’m completely ignorant of all current and recent pop culture. I don’t understand why you let it bother you, but I can understand that it does. All kinds of things annoy me

  11. I’ve never watched a single episode of Survivor ever. Now there has to be an exception in this case so where is my medal! Lmao! Great rant, I find people give up details about themselves they should keep locked away.

  12. I never watched one single episode of Game of Thrones. Gimme my medal.

I haven’t watched because I’m at the point where I know what I like and no longer need to sit through an episode or three out of FOMO. That’s the only reason I haven’t seen a single episode. But I’ve never dissed those who watched all 8 seasons.

You owe me a medal for that. 😁
