Question (Those Shoes) [April A2Z]

shoes sandals feet ankles toes

God knows you’re lookin’ good enough
But you’re so smooth and the world’s so rough
You might have somethin’ to lose
Oh, no pretty mama
What you gonna do in those shoes?

Welcome to my April A-Z! I’m exploring songs by the fabulous Eagles and today’s feature is “Those Shoes,” one of my first favorites from the band. I remember back in Chicago in 1982, when I hadn’t become a big fan yet, and someone played this song for me in computer class. Naturally, I ran right out after class, walked 5 miles in the snow (literally), and bought every Eagles album I could find. Today’s kids have it so easy because they can just sit in their toasty classroom and order music off Amazon.

Desperation in the singles bars
All those jerkoffs in their fancy cars
You can’t believe your reviews
Oh, no you can’t do that
Once you started wearin’ those shoes

“Those Shoes” is a track from the Eagles 1979 album The Long Run. It was not released as a single, so there is no chart info for it (the album however has been certified 7x platinum and has sold more than 8 million copies). As previously mentioned, this is the Eagles last album prior to their breakup in 1980. They regrouped in 1994 to tour and promote their cleverly named comeback album Hell Freezes Over, but they didn’t release a new studio album until 2007.

You just want someone to talk to
They just wanna to get their hands on you
You get whatever you choose
Oh, no you can’t do that
Once you started wearin’ those shoes

Don Felder, Don Henley, and Glenn Frey (RIP) wrote “Those Shoes.” Henley sang lead and Joe Walsh played the guitar solo (via Songfacts). Henley says the lyrics should be taken humorously.

E-trivia: Speaking of jokes, at the beginning of the Hell Freezes Over tour, Frey joked that the band hadn’t actually broken up but had gone on a 14-year vacation.

PS: If you’re wondering why I mostly post only the boring official vids now, it’s because the fun ones keep getting taken down.

  1. Very uncomfortable high-heeled shoes with “pretty little straps around your ankles,” are a metaphor for this compromise, so the woman is putting herself in a bad situation by wearing the sexy shoes. That is the one thing that I don’t like about the Eagles, they don’t like people using their videos.
