The Long Game

Chess pieces king knight rook pawn

She tries to play the long game,
But she has a short attention span;
The Jack of Hearts has called her name.

She stares at the board just the same,
Plotting a move the best she can,
As she tries to play the long game.

Her average score goes up in flame–
Not part of her strategic plan–
But the Jack of Hearts has called her name.

She turns to her team in shame
Attempting to explain she’s still a fan
Of trying to play the long game.

She has no one but herself to blame
For getting distracted by a man;
She failed at playing the long game,
When the Jack of Hearts called her name.
