TMP43: Chair Scraping

TMP monday peeve kitty cat

Welcome to my refreshed Monday Peeve! Unburden yourself of an annoyance and you’ll feel better afterward. Or not. Complain in my comments or crab in your own post. Doesn’t have to be on a Monday. You do you.

One of the “nails on a chalkboard” horror sounds to me is chair scraping, on any surface, but especially metal on concrete. It drives me BONKERS. Saturday night I was out with some friends in an outdoor patio area of a restaurant and the waiters (or whatever the PC term is to call them now) kept moving the chairs and tables to different configurations. Now before anyone starts, yes of course I get that this isn’t their fault and some manager told them to do it, but the point is SCRAPE SCRAPE SCRAPE to make me insane. I might have stayed longer and had dessert, but this noise was so horrible I left as soon as I could. There’s another food court place we used to congregate for dinner and games… and at a certain point, around 8pm, out came the workers to scrape scrape scrape the tables and chairs back to whatever optimal pattern. I won’t go there anymore either!

Ugh. Noises. Hate.

  2. I too can’t stand that noise. When teaching 7th grade the lab stools scraping on the tile floors drove me crazy. The teachers eventually added tennis balls to the stools so everyone didn’t go crazy.

  3. It’s one of the imperfections of human society that most people seem oblivious to obnoxious noises that they and, apparently, others produce. Noise pollution in general is one of my general peeves, and chair scraping is very close to the top of the list there, right beside leaf blowers and the voice actor (actress) who makes the recordings for AT&T’s telephone announcements in their call-tree.

  4. Yeah, I don’t like that chair scraping noise either. Here’s a couple others I can’t stand – actors/actresses when they put on a fake southern accent for the role. They never get it right, making it sound so hokey. Also when they have a whiny, nasally voice it’s so irritating.
Another is an important service, but still – when they sound an Amber Alert on my phone – that screechy loud noise is just awful!

  8. A neighbor catty-corner to me (kitteh!) has a pool cleaner that goes about the pool and sucks up whatever it finds as it goes. It also climbs the walls, up to the water’s surface, and it hangs there for a moment before heading back down. It makes a sucking/gurgling sound as it does this and it’s sucking in air.

First of all, the sucking/gurgling makes me think of some old guy on his death bed trying to get his last gasp of air before he denounces his wife of 75 years and leaves everything to his mistress and that’s annoying enough, but the OTHER part is … that pool cleaner is sending air into the pump system, making it REALLY INEFFICIENT!

Good lord, adjust your pool cleaner, fuck sake!

Noise has become a bigger issue than ever before l feel and as Roy above stated it seemingly has become an accepted form of imperfection with people. The noise that gets to me the most living here in Sandwich is people banging their car doors.

Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang and it just goes on. I am not expecting people to be tip toe quiet, but at least respect the fact that a four door car doesn’t need to have every single opening opened and shut twenty effing times!!

Noise in general since covid’s arrival has grown, people don’t care anymore and are not respective towards the fact that people live in the houses on the street.

  14. I am with you on that one, Paula! I usually avoid dining areas like that because the noise causes me to shrink inside myself. I will literally cover my ears and dart mean looks at everyone that does that.
