TMP42: Respect the Bubble

TMP monday peeve kitty cat

Welcome to my refreshed Monday Peeve! Unburden yourself of an annoyance and you’ll feel better afterward. Or not. Complain in my comments or crab in your own post. Doesn’t have to be on a Monday. You do you.

No, I’m not complaining about tailgaters this time, though that of course is tremendously peeve-worthy, but about the oblivious drivers who drive in your “bubble.” I don’t know what you were taught in Driver’s Ed, but I was taught that, if you can, you should maintain a bubble of space around your car to be safe. That means no tailgating (and try to get away from anyone tailgating you), and speed up or slow down to clear space on each side. People don’t do that! It’s so irritating. Why are they in my damn bubble? I try to lose them by adjusting my speed and they follow along by adjusting theirs so we stay even. GO AWAY!

Respect the bubble.

  1. Everyone seems to be in a hurry these days.

  2. I’ve long thought that there should be a way to flash signs to nearby drivers. You know, in the back window. Like GET OFF MY TAIL IDIOT! It might work.

  3. This bugs me, too. Driving on the Interstate is a constant battle to stay in a “gap” on all sides and establish said bubble. I think the problem is that most drivers can’t stand to see empty lane in front of them, resulting in everyone scrunching up together. Why anyone would choose to drive like that, by increasing the probability of a collision, is totally beyond me. Even when I was young and dumb and a much more aggressive driver, I did not do that. Maybe we really, really need to start up driver’s ed again.

  4. The bubble should always include the blind spot area. Hanging out in another driver’s blind spot is just asking for an accident.

    • Absolutely! I wonder if the lack of a real driver’s ed program in the public schools has contributed to people’s sloppy driving. Back in the day, the blind spot issue was hammered into us. Now, in California, you are required to have merely 3 BTW sessions with a professional and, presumably, your parents teach the rest. As long as you can pass one set of tests, you’re golden. Maybe they should retest everyone every 5 years, both written and driving…

  7. This is why I stopped driving on Norway 30-ish years ago: the person behind me never stayed at least onethousandtwo behind me. Made me feel unsafe. (They’re much better drivers now.)

  8. Someone should invent “arms” in cars so we can bump people with a “fist” so they will move away!! lol

  9. It is bad enough when someone has to drive in circumstances no one can control, like weather . When problems come from people’s deliberate negligence and defiance, though, that gets me crazy

  10. YES! Before we came down to Florida I had several days when these massive pickup trucks would follow me so closely I could not see their headlights in my rearview mirror. Back Off! I continued to drive at the speed limit.
