TMP37: Pet Tricks

TMP monday peeve kitty cat

Welcome to my refreshed Monday Peeve! Unburden yourself of an annoyance and you’ll feel better afterward. Or not. Complain in my comments or crab in your own post. Doesn’t have to be on a Monday. You do you.

Gatsby and I were checking out some Facebook Reels (like TikTok) and he was horrified to see people playing tricks on their pets. “Mommy, why do those people hate their cats?” he asked me (more or less). I said they didn’t, but then he wondered why you would play a mean trick on someone you love and make them all scared and upset. I thought that was a really good question. Well, of course we know why, right? It’s to get a “funny” video in hopes of racking up “likes” on their page. They’ll sacrifice their pet’s peace of mind for a few minutes to get that vid. They may do the same thing to their kids, who knows. I find it all disgusting. In my world, you try to create a gentle and peaceful environment for your loved ones, not sneak up behind them with a cucumber to get them to jump into the air.

  1. It’s a cruel thing to do.

  2. Thank you for saying this. I thought I was starting to notice that some of these “cute” animal videos are kind of set up. At the very least, they are equivalent to the unintentional (minor) injury videos that aren’t even funny, really.

  4. You should never play mean tricks on a cat. They are already dreaming up ways to put you out of your misery, and you feed them. I hate those Tic Tock videos. My grandkids love them, so there lies the problem.

  5. I feel guilty now as we used to play hide and seek with the dog………. though only one of us hid at a time.

  8. Here in Blighty there used to be a TV program which called “You’ve Been Framed” which encouraged people to send in “hilarious” mishaps caught on home movies, and mostly it was adults whom had done something stupid and clearly saw the funny side. But it frequently bugged when they would show clips of small children potentially having injured themselves or just being humiliated on national TV. What sort of consent could a 6 year old give to allow the clip to be shown.

  10. I cannot stand being scared on purpose nor can I tolerate the “funniest” shows that show people getting hurt.

  15. That sort of video is not something I even bother to watch. I have watched “funny” pet videos, but the moment they turn mean, I’m out of there. I don’t mind seeing two cats or dogs or a dog and a cat being silly, I do mind if the poor thing(s) look terrified though. I tend to think “Asshole.” and pity the pet.
