SLS: Breakups

Couple silhouette romance

Jim’s theme today is breakup songs, and there are so many great ones it’s hard to choose. I went with Lobo’s “Don’t Expect Me To Be Your Friend” because it’s especially meaningful to me. I’m not into being friends with those I’ve loved and lost, and this was an issue a couple times in my life. Mostly however my lost loves simply ghosted away into nothingness, which was fine by me. The times they didn’t though… well, these lyrics are right on target.

Kent Lavoie (“Lobo”) wrote DEMTBYF for his 1972 album Of A Simple Man. It peaked at No. 8 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in the US, and stayed at No. 1 for two weeks on US Easy Listening. It is a pretty song and easy to listen to… unless you’re actually paying attention to the lyrics, in which case, it’s really sad. At least, to me it is.

You always act so happy when I see you
You smile that way you take my hand and then
Introduce me to your latest lover
That’s when I feel the walls start crashing in.

I love you too much to ever start liking you
So let’s just let the story kinda end
I love you too much to ever start liking you
So don’t expect me to be your friend.

Yeah. I’m not one of those who hope that a man I once loved will find bliss with someone else. Pffft on that. He should regret messing things up with me and pine away forever for my awesomeness!

  1. I remember this, though ‘Me and You and a Dog Named Boo’ and ‘I’d love you to want me’ are more familiar.

  3. I never went back to any of my exes and i have no clue what happened to any of them. Yes the song is very pleasant sounding Paula, especially if you block out the meaning.

  4. I like this one, meaning and all. I’ve had a couple of relationships like this, actually right around the time this song came out (I was 16, you know what that’s like…)

  5. I think if you did go back to an ex, it wouldn’t take too long to remember why they were an ex. Breaking up has to be one of those things that humans do universally, and never have and never will figure out how to do it right. I’ll bet love has caused more tears than gladness.
Wow I sound pretty cynical today. Probably low blood sugar. Or high blood sugar.
And, nope, being friends with an ex means there’s a winner and there’s a loser. So, not a win-win, if I may speak in Corporatese going forward.

  6. I can’t dial back and not feel, not remember, either. If I’m done with someone as a lover, I’m done with them, period.

  7. Pretty song – I remembered it when it got to the chorus! 🙂
