TMP7: Questions

TMP monday peeve

Welcome to my refreshed Monday Peeve! Unburden yourself of an annoyance and you’ll feel better afterward. Or not. Complain in my comments or crab in your own post. Doesn’t have to be on a Monday. You do you.

Omg, what is it with all the freaking questions online lately?!? Someone must have read that asking questions is the best way to get to know someone and/or show interest, so they decided hey I’ll ask a billion people what their fave band is. Naturally, this creates buzz/churn or whatever you call it to keep the original poster in the feed. Not talking about WordPress (today), but the other social media. Though I admit I quit doing the blog award posts because of the endlessly annoying questions.

I stay on those sites for the connections who don’t blog, but it’s becoming impossible to wade through all the garbage posts. The worst thing is… I have friends who constantly reply to this crap from random radio stations and other public pages, so as soon as I block one, three more pop up like demented jack-in-the-boxes. I don’t want to mute my friends, since the whole damn idea of belonging to these sites is to stay in touch with them.

But ugh.

  1. I know. It’s simply the lowest common denominator and the simplest, most one-dimensional way to manipulate and engage people. I realize that I’m responding to your post, but at least it is because you presented an idea, it resonates, and I think of things and then comment.
The other ploy is the too-easy brain teaser, like tricking someone into thinking they are special because that can respond smartly to a statement like “There are no female names that start and end with the letter “A”. Prove me wrong!” Please…

  3. Since I like questions (not those pablum baby food “favorite” ones granted) I enjoy doing them here. I have ceased to belong to any other social media site because of many of the same reasons you gave. Not the questions so much, but the overwhelming stupidity I’d encounter when I’d visit them. I lost a lot of connections when I severed Facebook. I just couldn’t ‘do the dumb’ anymore. As long as a person is comfortable and enjoys what they participate in, I suppose that’s the point, right?

  5. Yup! Do these people not have anything else to do? Are their lives that sad? My son works in digital marketing and he has told me that all those “What kind of Cat are you?” things that turn up on FB are gathering data which then goes on to the number crunching gnats. So years ago I stopped ever even clicking on them.
