The Monday Peeve 76

monday peeve kitty cat

Smiles and positive posts are all well and good, but sometimes I need to vent a bit. How about you? That’s what The Monday Peeve is all about, a chance to blow off a little steam at the beginning of the week, so then we can go merrily on our way once again (hah). I’ll pick a topic that’s on my mind, but you can vent about whatever you please, here in comments or on your own blog. Grab the photo, use the TMP tag, link back to me (or not), and Bob’s yer uncle. I do reserve the right to delete any links that offend my delicate sensibilities. So far, none have, but it could happen. I have feelings!

OMG, I am so tired of identical twins being used in fiction. It’s such a letdown really, like the writer has simply run out of imagination. I sometimes enjoy a story or movie until it turns out that “the twin” did the thing. UGH! It’s starting to feel like duex ex machina every time now ~ you know what I mean? That’s when a writer gets the story out of a tangled mess by plopping in something out of the blue. Literally the definition means “a god from a machine” from when the ancients suspended a crane over the stage to drop down a god during sticky wickets. That’s how I think of twins in fiction. How could the hero have been home with his wife AND committing the murder? Simple… plop in a twin. How could the beautiful mysterious woman be dead and also not dead? TWIN! Grrrr…

  1. Yes, it’s becoming so passé. Need to think new ideas for story line.

  2. Growing up a twin I can totally get behind this peeve. Twins are always portrayed as good and bad in films or on tv. I saw a clip for a Hallmark movie where the twin brothers switch places. So childish…nobody does that.

  3. I feel so ignorant as I had to look up Deus ex machina.

  4. Twins was good back in the day of Sweet Valley High, but that was enough twinning for me.

  5. Trite and unimaginative plot comes to my mind. Oddly, I’ve been reading a spin-off series by a writer I really enjoy(ed) who wrote a whole slew of books about one heroine. I guess she felt she’d explored the heroine’s tales enough, so she’s written two (or three) “novella” series and I’m reading one of those. I was dismayed to discover the author had created an annoying character ‘sister’ for one of those novella series heroines. She wrote probably 25-30 books about her main heroine (in which the novella heroine played a supporting role) and there was never a mention of this stupid “evil twin” b.s., but suddenly there is? Aw. ‘Course I’m not a famous writer who got rich off a series either…. O_o Maybe those trite plot gimmicks do work…

  6. The last good use of twins was the movie “The Prestige”. I thought it was good anyway🤷🏼‍♀️
