SLS ~ Contrasts

Song lyric Sunday

Thanks once again to our musical host Jim Adams for providing another great Song Lyric Sunday prompt. Today’s theme is contrasts and a tune that perfectly illustrates this concept is the funny theme song from Green Acres. This TV show featured a lawyer (played by Eddie Albert) who wanted to give up city life to become a rural farmer, and his glamorous wife (played by Eva Gabor) who missed the city.

Green Acres

Green Acres is the place to be.
Farm livin’ is the life for me.
Land spreadin’ out so far and wide.
Keep Manhattan, just give me that countryside.
New York is where I’d rather stay.
I get allergic smelling hay.
I just adore a penthouse view.
Dah-ling I love you but give me Park Avenue.
…The chores.
…The stores.
…Fresh air.
…Times Square.
You are my wife.
Good bye, city life.
Green Acres we are there.

This song was written for the show in 1965 by Vic Mizzy. Green Acres ran for 6 seasons when it was dumped in the “rural purge.”

  1. That’s a good take on the prompt Paula! Well done for finding a different kind of contrast 🙂👍

  2. I used to watch Green Acres all the time and Arnold the pig was my favorite. Arnold became so beloved, that many people stopped eating pork. Great contrast Paula.

  4. Thank you for taking me back to my childhood! I watched this every single week in syndication! Those two were definitely the most contrasting people there were. 🙂

  5. It’s on weeknights at 9:30 on MeTV, if you get that. Watching it now after 50 years, I realize what a profoundly weird show it was.

  6. I hadn’t heard the term “rural purge” before. This is weirdly topical today. The electoral vote gives us the president, but the popular vote decides what’s on TV!

Fun show too. Thanks for the memories!

  9. Ha. One example of a show that was “so stupid, it’s funny.” Of course Arnold made the show. I hope he had a good contract.

  10. I may have mentioned this before somewhere, but when I last visited the States, I watched a lot of old shows, including “Green Acres”, and was pleasantly surprised. For some reason, the older sit-coms seem more intelligent to me.
