Jim Adams hosts our wonderful Song Lyric Sunday and today he gave us some theme word gems. I chose “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love To Town” by Kenny Rogers & The First Edition. RIP Kenny. 🌹
This song was written by Mel Tillis about a WWII veteran (though it is widely assumed to be about a Vietnam veteran) and first recorded by Waylon Jennings in 1966. It was a huge hit for Rogers when he covered it in 1969, and it is tied for my favorite song of his, along with “The Gambler.”
Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love To Town
You’ve painted up your lips and rolled and curled your tinted hair
Ruby are you contemplating going out somewhere?
The shadows on the wall tell me the sun is going down
Oh Ruby, don’t take your love to town
It wasn’t me that started that old crazy Asian war
But I was proud to go and do my patriotic chore
And yes, it’s true that I’m not the man I used to be
Oh Ruby, I still need some company
It’s hard to love a man whose legs are bent and paralyzed
And the wants and needs of a woman your age really I realize
But it won’t be long, I’ve heard them say, until I’m not around
Oh Ruby, don’t take your love to town
She’s leaving now cause I just heard the slamming of the door
The way I know I heard its slams one hundred times before
And if I could move I’d get my gun and put her in the ground
Oh Ruby, don’t take your love to town
Oh Ruby, for God’s sake, turn around

My absolute favorite among Kenny Rogers’ repertoire. Roger Miller also did a beautiful version.

Three in a row, I don’t think this has ever happened before on SLS, but it is the perfect choice.

Back in the late 70’s/early 80’s, there was a style of rock called “rig rock” in the countries bordering on the North Sea, because it was really popular with the folks who worked on the oil rigs there. One “rig rock” duo—Casino Steel and Cockney Rebel (a Norwegian and a, well, Cockney, respectively)—did their version of “Ruby”. I like it. Pained and peppy at the same time.

Gary Holton (RIP) and Casino Steel did a version in 1981, with Asian war” is changed to “Irish war”. Their style is called “rig rock” because it was popular with the North Sea oil rig workers. I like it because Gary’s vocals ooze of pain and anger.
