The Monday Peeve 19

Monday Peeve kitty

Smiles and positive posts are all well and good, but sometimes I need to vent a bit. How about you? That’s what The Monday Peeve is all about, a chance to blow off a little steam at the beginning of the week, so then we can go merrily on our way once again (hah). I’ll pick a topic that’s on my mind, but you can vent about whatever you please, here in comments or on your own blog. Grab the photo, use the #TMP tag, and link back to me (or not ~ I dgaf), and Bob’s yer uncle. I do reserve the right to delete any links that offend my delicate sensibilities. So far, none have, but it could happen! I have feelings!

Last Monday I peeved: “Stop fawning over celebrities. It’s gross.” That was related to how people drool over pics of older celeb women and “compliment” them by saying they don’t look their age. Today I have a similar but different peeve: the continual obsession with Meghan Markle, especially with the negative conservative spin. Note: I’ve updated this post a few times since I first wrote and scheduled it last week. New info keeps coming in on this hot topic… you’d think it was more important than a war or something! 🙄

My first peeve is… why the hell do any Americans, but in particular righties, give a crap about the doings of the British Royals? Yes, MM is American by birth, but who cares? She got married in England and now lives in Canada. Yet, conservatives here are outraged that she gets any money from the Crown or whatever when she isn’t having tea with the Queen. Who gives a shit? Let them sort it out, or not.

Second, it’s clearly racist, especially for those who also carried on about Michelle Obama’s fashion choices and Barack’s golf games while staying silent re Melania’s clothing and Donald’s golfing. There have been side by side comparisons of the negative press MM received for doing the exact same things as the revered Kate Middleton (cradling their baby bumps, forex), and there is no other explanation except the difference in skin tone.

Third, there’s this whole awful underlying gaslighting thing going on and it makes me sick. On the one hand, MM is called a scheming gold-digger who plotted to nab a prince so she could live a life of lazy luxury. But when it turns out that she actually wants to work, not sit around doing boring teas, she’s lambasted for that and called a scheming hussy who only wants to trade in on her “brand.” No matter what she does, the haters will hate her, just as they hated Barack, Michelle, and their children, simply because she is not white.

It’s disgusting.

Note: the Royals and H&M have sorted things out. H&M will no longer do Royal things or be referred to as Highnesses. And they have to repay the cost of renovating Frogmore Cottage, where they live when in England. So, Fox News readers should be satisfied, right? Wrong! You can never satisfy haters. They are too deeply invested in their obsession.

  4. I’m in England and I don’t care a shit either. I am bored to tears with it all. I never read stuff about the royals. Just booooooring!

  5. Well, it entered the news cycle. The global population is just a big fish tank and the powerful feed us these things to keep us busy profitable consumers.

That having happened, I noticed. The racism built in to the British tabloids is interesting, because we’re so often fed lines about how Britain doesn’t have the race problems America does. Well, that’s horseshit. The British flippin’ established them here. Anyway, all countries do, they just look different. I credit both of them for distancing themselves from a family that has become a toxic anachronism.

  6. I’m fed up with reading the H and M show. It’s everywhere. Let them go and do their own thing. It’s what they want afterall.

  7. I have to admit, starting at a very early age, I’ve had sort of a fascination with the royals, but I think I liked it more for the history, you know, back when royals actually had a say in British politics. Anyway, I’m with you! Who cares what they do? It’s not like Harry was ever going to be King anyway & even so, what does it matter? It’s nobody’s business but theirs. Why do people put so much stock into things that don’t matter?!?! Ugh, like you said, it boils down to racism, but again, it’s baffling. I have never understood how people can be so anti anything, just mind your own business! As long as it’s not hurting anyone, who cares???? Even the friggin’ queen is fine with it!! Lol. People are truly baffling.

    • They are! I kinda wish I understood it and more about people in general because I find so much baffling. Like why do people get violent over their sports teams? WHO CARES? I don’t get it…

      • Yes!! A little friendly rivalry is fun among sports fans, but it’s literally just a game, it has no bearing on any of our lives, it doesn’t really matter! I enjoy sports, but I’m not so emotionally invested that I allow it it ruin my day when they lose. I’m an Orioles fan, if that were the case, I’d always be depressed! Hahaha!! And starting a fight over a sports team is absolutely absurd. I which my life was calm enough that I had the energy to get so upset over pointless things, geesh!!

  8. That was apparently an ‘over the pond’ peeve…because my first thought was who the $%#! is Meghan Markle? But then I live under a rock (deliberately) and NEVER pay attention to ‘celeb ‘news'”. Because usually it’s not news, it’s some bit of on-going crap that nobody, save the celeb and perhaps their publicist gives a fig about. I know no figs were given by me certainly! Thanks Paula for starting Monday off on the right foot by giving everyone a place to peeve. My own is coming shortly… 🙂

  9. Haters exist, that is a fact of life. People see things that others do as being socially unacceptable and they immediately start spewing out negativity instead of taking a deep look inside of themselves which would allow them to realize that they are far from being perfect. Only those who are without sin should be throwing stones and those who live in glass houses should never throw stones. Today is MLK Day and we should all try to become better people and stop hating others. Paula, this is a very appropriate topic for today, nice peeve.

  11. …or not ‘over the pond.” Why are ‘Yanks” (some of them, I’ve NEVER given a sh*t about the British Royals) obsessed with Royals ‘over there?” Maybe no class? Maybe a limited attention span? Maybe they’d obsess over ANYONE who actually garnered 15 minutes of fame, because they realize they never will obtain it. And the color thing? Oh heck. But I’m a ‘northerner’ (a true Yankee) and my people didn’t hate on people of color (except the Native American and ALL original settlers did that). I’m more glad than ever that I don’t ‘do’ celeb ‘news’ Koff koff **GOSSIP**koff koff… Here’s my more tame and less on topic (for the day) peeve link:

  12. Also, MM is not British nor of royal heritage. I love H&M, I love how they are with each other, so I’m rooting for them! Haters can just go turn themselves into an Ascot hat and perch on somebody with head lice.

  14. The reaction is crackers.

It’s hard to comprehend what is going on because so many people have got their own angle on it.

At first I just thought they were making a decision to protect their own mental/emotional health. I am all for that. They are humans. I am still not sure, but I think the main cause for their hurt is media and social media behavior.

It’s all going to make for an interesting series 8 of The Crown. I have blanked a lot of what has been said, because I don’t know why they are saying it. Today, colleagues were talking about the couple doing voice overs for Disney. I don’t know what that’s all about. But some were moaning about it. I think they feel that some of the other members of the Windsor family have given up a lot of lucrative opportunities for the sake of their reputation.

I don’t think anyone would suggest them as lazy. I believe they all have busy schedules, but anyone who works full days deserves the right to sit down and enjoy a tea-break, whether they are drinking out of expensive china or disposable cup (recyclable one of course!) But it does seem that they have a different vision of the kind of role they want to play. It will be interesting.

People are comparing them to the Beckhams. I don’t think much of the Beckhams (nothing personal, I just don’t like the whole culture of celebrity superstars amassing millions upon millions). Maybe it’s because I don’t agree with huge fortunes. I don’t think it’s right.

One thing that baffles me is why the media seem to be turning her life into such a soap opera turning to her father for interviews. It seems fairly obvious he has an axe to grind. And perhaps he is hurt over not being close to his daughter, but some of his public comments sound very bitter and scathing now. It seems very low that the media have decided to raise the profile of a very personal and very upsetting family “rift” and put it on an international platform for people to gawp, laugh, or grumble about. Its so utterly crass of the media to play those games.

My own view is simple of them as two human beings with a baby. I want them to be happy and healthy. I think anyone who is well known has a responsibility to think about how they might influence others. So I would hope they and every one else would use any influence they have for positive, wholesome, lovely things.

I have a lot to say for someone who does not really have a strong opinion. It’s just that there are so many more important things going on in the world. It annoys me that it’s on the news everyday. I want it to be laid to rest now, and hope everyone can stop getting their knickers in such a twist!

    • I totally agree, and great point about her father. Today I see there is to be a special on him. Whyyyyy? Leave them in peace!

Regarding the fortunes. Today I read that 22 men have more money than everyone else in the world (or something like that). And every minute of every day their holdings increase more than we will make in a lifetime. It’s crazy!

      • I know. I know. To me it cheapsens any media providers that just seem to want to milk as much drama out of it as possible. Such poor taste. In all honesty he comes across as a man who is unwell, and I don’t just mean physically. I don’t know if he realizes that. I know all sorts of upsets go on within families. But most don’t out the family laundry for all and sundry.

The amassing of wealth is crazy. I don’t see why it is allowed. I work for charities who are crying out for more funding. Over 20,000 full-time international volunteers who do not get paid any wages (they are provided with basic board, meals and can go into the donated clothing room and take what fits them. (That’s a provision that can;t be abused because the wardrobes are small.)
As unpaid volunteers, we look at billionaires and it is baffling, baffling.
