Song Lyric Sunday: Desire

Once again, Jim gives us a good selection of theme words to choose from. I went with desire. A powerful song that explores this concept is Patti Smith’s “Because the Night.” I’ve always found it super intense to listen to, especially when she sings it, though I do enjoy Natalie Merchant’s cover as well.

I learned while looking up the lyrics that BTN was originally a Bruce Springsteen song for his album Darkness on the Edge of Town in 1977. But then Bruce said meh I don’t want another love song, so his producer Jimmy Iovine, who was also producing Patti’s album Easter in the studio next door, ran over there with it and Patti recorded BTN with some new lyrics of her own. They’re listed as co-writers. Apparently The Boss does sing BTN in concert occasionally.

Because The Night

Take me now baby here as I am
Pull me close try an understand
I work all day out in the hot sun
Stay with me now till the mornin’ comes
Come on now try and understand
The way I feel when I’m in your hands
Take me now as the sun descends
They can’t hurt you now
They can’t hurt you now
They can’t hurt you now

Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us

What I got I have earned
What I’m not I have learned
Desire and hunger is the fire I breathe
Just stay in my bed till the morning comes
Come on now try and understand
The way I feel when I’m in your hands
Take me now as the sun descends
They can’t hurt you now
They can’t hurt you now
They can’t hurt you now

Because the night

Your love is here and now
The vicious circle turns and burns without
Though I cannot live forgive me now
The time has come to take this moment and
They can’t hurt you now

Because the night

      • really!?!? I think WP is glitching yet in ever more aggravating ways. When i went to publish it this morning it went through its usual routine, then when I went to close it, it said i would lose everything. I reloaded and it was back in the pending folder so I had to republish it. Hoping that glitch smoothes out soon!

  9. Good one! I think I’ve only heard Natalie Merchant’s version, though. I’ve at times found myself humming this song at random times. πŸ™‚
