Soul mates are the stuff of poetry and romance novels, and who doesn’t love a good fairy tale? It’s hard to believe in a soul mate if you don’t believe in souls though; and souls come packaged up with all that other mystical glitter I can’t quite wrap my brain around. Despite my creative forays, my heart is made of math. One of my favorite lines from a romance novel was “she had his number, and it was 666.” I would credit the book and the author if I could remember either, but I can’t. I don’t think I ever dated the devil, just your ordinary liars and narcissists, but that guy wasn’t the devil of course. They never are, in romance novels. No matter what kind of terrible choice the romance novel heroine appears to be making with her wild and crazy attraction, it’s always exactly the right choice. But that’s because we’re writing her story. I have written my own stories, with my own heroes. Perhaps that’s why I’m solo.

I’ve heard it should be called sock mate. You are already a whole, independent unit on your own, but there is also a match for you out there somewhere.

I found and married my best friend… soul mate. Yes, we have had major disagreements. Blended families but… this second marriage is 28.5 years strong!!

Quite an interesting post! Thank you for it. It put me in mind of something…
A small handful of times in my life, I have found someone I resonate with in ways uncommon and extraordinary. I call them my “Great Loves” because they have been much more life-changing than my other loves.
Yet, in each case, something has happened — including bad decisions on my part — to part us. I would go head to head with any romance novel on how life-affirming and worthwhile those loves have been. But I sure can’t compete on the grounds of living happily ever after. I actually wouldn’t want to, either. I’m insufferably happy where I am.
By the way, do you find your worldview and values resonate with the predominant worldview and values of Orange County? I ask because I live in Colorado Springs. A lot of Orange County folks migrate here — or have since 1992, when Focus on the Family moved here.

No. Orange County values are mostly about about consumer culture, which I donβt (and canβt) relate to except in passing. Of course, I like comfort and pretty trinkets, but I lose interest quickly in discussing who has what and how to accumulate more. I have been lucky however to make some friends I can talk to about my interests in poetry and other topics, plus there is always the online community. I canβt see myself leaving California, since both my married daughters live here, and now I have a grandbaby too.
Thank you for the comment!

I had my hunches you don’t hold to typical Orange County values — whatever those might be. You’ve got “independent” written all over you, if I may be permitted to say so. Good to hear you have people in the county to share your thoughts with.
Same here. I’ve got some good friends here, which I feel is one of the greatest blessings one can have in life.
